8 Once you’ve tightened the stem, check that there’s an equal gap at the top and bottom between the clamping sections. If there’s a difference, tighten or loosen the stem bolts until they match. This is critical, as it’ll ensure that there’s an equal force on each bolt and that the bar is properly clamped. This is especially important with carbon bars and lightweight aluminium ones.

9 Check that the bars are straight and that the stem is tight. Line the bars up with the front hub. You can hold the wheel between your legs and line the bars up by twisting them. You may need to loosen the stem bolts slightly to make this possible. Recheck the play – if the Aheadset remains tight and you’ve tried resetting the stem bolts, it’s likely that one of the bearings or weather seals has been inserted the wrong way, so check this and re-tighten using a Torque wrench and the manufacturer’s recommended torque settings.
